The wargaming world lost a legend this past week. Allen Calhamer, who created the classic boardgame Diplomacy, has died.

Mentioned in his obituary is some of the people who played his game. President John F. Kennedy, Henry Kissinger and Walter Cronkite.

In the future, will the designers of Call to Duty get a mention that a president played their game? Hopefully not, for I strongly believe that it is the unique social aspects of boardgaming that make it a special hobby.

So in the tradition of the Royal Navy, let us all raise a glass in a toast this Sunday – “Absent friends, absent friends.”
